Outside machinist apprentices install and test a ship’s major machinery and other mechanical components. They learn the safe operation of shop machines and hand and power tools to install and test systems and nuclear reactor turbines, generators, pumps, propellers, rudders, periscopes and armaments.

The WCSC supports the entire apprentice program by providing each apprentice with the technical knowledge required for the mastery of a trade, and an opportunity to obtain an associate degree in business administration, engineering technology, or engineering. The curriculum provides the educational foundation necessary for continued growth throughout a career.
The Apprentice School is accredited by the Commission of the Council on Occupational Education.
