Frequently Asked Questions-EDGE

Below are frequently asked questions for EDGE classes.

Can I apply to EDGE as a high school student?

Yes, as long as you are at least a high school junior and meet the eligibility requirements, you can apply for EDGE.

What if EDGE classes begin during/after my start-date?

Apprentices can take EDGE classes up until their formal WCSC (World Class Shipbuilding Curriculum) academics begin. WCSC classes do not begin immediately on your start-date. As an apprentice, you typically work in your trade for a few months before classes start, so you should have time to take at least one quarter of EDGE (although this is not guaranteed).

If you have already started your WCSC classes, you are unable to participate in EDGE courses.

Is EDGE required for apprentices?

No. EDGE is an optional, online version of our courses, but HIGHLY recommended due to the benefits outlined on this page. As an apprentice, if these courses are not completed through EDGE, you’ll eventually have to take them in-person.

You will be granted credit for any EDGE classes you successfully complete and will not have to repeat them once your WCSC classes begin. Final grades in EDGE courses will contribute towards your Apprentice School transcript and GPA, unless you request to have the grade dropped.

Why should I take EDGE classes if I’m already an apprentice?
  • #1 EDGE allows you to get a head-start on required classes. You can move through academics faster and spend more time in your trade. If you successfully complete an EDGE course, you won’t have to repeat that class when your formal academics begin.
  • #2 EDGE classes give you the unique advantage of dropping final grades, unlike in-person courses. Unsatisfactory final grades in EDGE can be dropped from your transcript, and you can retake the course, assuming you have upheld all academic integrity standards.
    • Apprentices in formal WCSC (World Class Shipbuilding Curriculum) academics are held to stricter standards because they are taking classes on-the-clock. In formal WCSC classes, final grades below a C are kept on your transcript and may result in release from your apprenticeship.
  • #3 EDGE courses are done on your own time and are asynchronous, so you don’t have to worry about falling behind if you miss an important class day due to travel for sports, vacation, sick days, etc. With EDGE, you will watch pre-recorded videos and complete tasks by the deadline provided. Some courses require occasional online meetings at designated times; these are communicated once you receive acceptance into a course.

EDGE can only help you, not hurt you!!

What time are EDGE classes?

EDGE courses are done on your own time and are asynchronous. For most assignments, you will watch pre-recorded videos and complete tasks by the deadline provided.

Some courses require occasional online meetings at designated times for tests or presentations; these are communicated once you receive acceptance into a course. For classes with required meetings, they will occur on a weekday between the hours of 5:15pm – 7:15pm.

How do I submit official transcripts for EDGE?

Official transcripts must come from your school itself, not from you. If you are a current apprentice, current/prior EDGE student, or already have a start-date with the school, you do not need to submit new official transcripts if nothing has changed.

  • Option 1 (preferred): Ask your school’s guidance counselor to email an official copy of your transcript to [email protected]. Even if you have graduated high school, you may still request that they do this on your behalf.
  • Option 2: Submit a request on Parchment.com. List all schools you have attended (high school or higher) and request that they send your transcripts to [email protected] or “The Apprentice School.” If you use Parchment, email [email protected] with your name and the date you submitted the Parchment request.

For any transcript issues or questions, please contact us by email. [email protected]

How do I contact someone in EDGE?
  • You may email questions to [email protected] or call us at 757-380-7991.
