Description

This program’s candidates are selected from the optional program apprentices who have attained an Associate of Science in Engineering. The marine engineering apprenticeship is a program with a unique integration of planned work experiences in engineering coupled with upper-division level college courses in the Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical or electrical engineering from Old Dominion University.

Marine Engineer apprentices:

  • Complete two years’ on-the-job training in a shipbuilding discipline.
  • Complete three years’ on-the-job training in an optional discipline.
  • Complete three years’ specialized engineering work rotations.
  • Earn a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering from Old Dominion University.

Marine engineer apprentices are full-time employees of Newport News Shipbuilding. Time spent in academic classes is generally part of an apprentice’s paid work week, resulting in a unique, specialized combination of on-the-job-training and related academic instruction.

To be considered for the Professional Development Program marine engineer apprenticeship, current apprentices must:

  • Demonstrate excellence in academic coursework, shipbuilding and optional disciplines, attendance and aptitude as well as a personal interest in marine engineering.
