Description
This program’s candidates are selected from the optional program apprentices who have attained an Associate of Science in Engineering. The marine engineering apprenticeship is a program with a unique integration of planned work experiences in engineering coupled with upper-division level college courses in the Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical or electrical engineering from Old Dominion University.
Marine Engineer apprentices:
- Complete two years’ on-the-job training in a shipbuilding discipline.
- Complete three years’ on-the-job training in an optional discipline.
- Complete three years’ specialized engineering work rotations.
- Earn a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering from Old Dominion University.
Marine engineer apprentices are full-time employees of Newport News Shipbuilding. Time spent in academic classes is generally part of an apprentice’s paid work week, resulting in a unique, specialized combination of on-the-job-training and related academic instruction.
Requirements
To be considered for the Professional Development Program marine engineer apprenticeship, current apprentices must:
- Demonstrate excellence in academic coursework, shipbuilding and optional disciplines, attendance and aptitude as well as a personal interest in marine engineering.
- Complete an apprenticeship in an optional discipline with an Associate of Science in Engineering.
- Be an honors graduate or have honors standing.
